Install geothermal loop systems designed for tomorrow’s needs

    Green PE100 Geothermal Pipe
    PE100

When it comes to geothermal installations, two things make good business sense. Selecting the right sized equipment and loop systems to maximize heating and cooling efficiency, and installing loop systems designed to meet not only today’s needs but those in the future as well.

It’s not rocket science. Regardless of the size or type of heat pump they feed into, geothermal loop systems are made to last. The sturdy high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe that winds through the open and closed loop systems used in our industry carries warranties of up to 55 years.

That means thirty or forty years from now, when a home or business owner wants to upgrade to a newer heat pump, they should be able to do so with the confidence that their existing loop system will be able to support what will surely be a more efficient pump given our ever evolving technology.

As contractors, drillers and installers, we should all take pride in making sure we’re designing the right system for the business or homeowner from the outset. And that includes not only ensuring the systems we design heat the entire home or business, but that they also take into consideration future heating and cooling needs.

Consider the open and closed loop systems used in geothermal installations. Regardless of where someone lives or works in Canada, the average home or business experiences a heat loss of about 60,000 BTUs and therefore requires a 5-tonne geothermal system to heat or cool the entire building. The size of the equipment and the characteristics of the property help determine whether or not an open or closed loop system is used.

    Open Loop System

Open loop systems are often the loop system of choice on properties that have an existing water well. The key determining factor is quantity. It’s important that the water well has the capacity to support the geothermal system beyond the existing domestic requirements of the building (eg. the water used for drinking, flushing toilets, showers, washing clothes, etc.). Open loop systems need two gallons per minute of water per nominal tonne; therefore a 5-tonne geothermal system would need ten US gallons per minute over and above domestic water requirements at peak times. If the average household uses eight gallons of water per minute for domestic use, then the well would need to supply 18 gallons of water per minute to be effective.

It’s not unusual with the installation of open loop systems to have to upgrade the building’s existing pump and pressure systems to accommodate the additional load generated by the geothermal system. This type of loop system generally calls for hiring a licensed groundwater specialist to drill a second well. Groundwater is drawn from an aquifer through the supply well and pumped into the heat pump, while discharged water from the heat pump is redirected into the second well and back into the same aquifer.

    Closed Loop System

In cases where an open loop system isn’t feasible, a closed loop system can be used instead. In closed loop systems, a continuous geothermal loop is placed in the ground either horizontally or vertically, depending on the expanse of the property. Heat transfer fluid re-circulates through the loop with both ends connected to the heat pump in the building and absorbs the natural heating and cooling properties from the earth.

A 5-tonne geothermal system would require a minimum of 5,000 square feet of ground space for a horizontal loop. In this case, a continuous loop of pipe is buried five to six feet below the ground. This is an ideal system from a cost and simplicity standpoint.

When the land space isn’t available, a vertical loop system can be used instead. Given the type of drilling equipment needed to install a vertical loop system, this approach is more expensive than the horizontal loop system. Depending on the property conditions and available equipment, a 5-tonne geothermal system would require between 900 – 1200 feet of drilling to accommodate about 1800 feet of continuously looped HDPE pipe. The ideal approach is to drill two 455 foot holes to maximize heat transferability from the ground to the pipe (allow five feet for hook-up). Generally speaking this would have more heat transfer value than drilling 10-90 foot holes and is less invasive to the property.

I prefer to install 1 ¼” pipe in vertical loops because it provides greater heat exchange. However, I also appreciate that our GeoSmart DeltaBase 95GT drill rig is one of the few in the country capable of drilling 450 foot holes (900 feet of drilling). If the capacity of the drilling equipment available is limited or the terrain affects how deep you can drill, it may be necessary to drill as many as twelve 100 foot holes (1200 feet of drilling) and use the smaller ¾” pipe to obtain the same heat exchange as the larger pipe.

The trend is moving towards longer loops to support the higher efficiency heat pumps hitting the market. And as efficient as our geothermal systems are today, we know they’ll be even more so in 30 to 40 years. So be generous when installing loop systems today.

The right heat pump, the right loop system and the right-sized pipe will meet the heating and cooling needs of the entire house or business both now and in the future, ultimately generating proud and satisfied customers and reflecting well on the industry.

  • GeoSmart Energy Remains Ahead of the Curve with New Product Lines

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    February 24, 2010

Ottawa, ON – When it comes to innovative consumer-oriented product development, GeoSmart Energy is continuing to pull out all the stops with the release today of its new ECO and GeoAir product lines.

Unveiled at the first of four regional GeoSmart Energy dealer meetings being held across the country, the geothermal company’s competitively-priced ECO-Y Series and ECO-Z Series heat pumps and leading edge GeoAir PCO air purifier are already generating ‘buzz’ among dealers eager to move the new products into their showrooms.

“GeoSmart Energy is proving once again why they are at the forefront in geothermal product design,” says Mike Barry of ComfortZone, Cobourg, Ontario in attendance at the product unveiling. “It’s thanks to consumer-friendly product diversification like this that we’re able to remain highly competitive within the HVAC industry.”

The company’s GeoAir PCO, one of four indoor air quality products in this line, introduces the Canadian HVAC market to one of the most advanced air purifier technologies available today. Unlike existing air cleaning systems that rely solely on ultraviolet light, the PCO integrates a titanium dioxide semiconductor to leverage photocatalytic oxidation allowing it to vaporize indoor air pollutants, including those that cause odors, and break them down into non-toxic products like C02 and H20. Bacteria, viruses, mold spores and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) are destroyed when they come into contact with the system’s 187 square-inch Ti02 grid. The system is cost-effective, maintenance-free and provides maximum energy efficiency with negligible resistance to airflow.

“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) consistently ranks indoor air pollution as among the top five environmental risks to public health,” notes Chad Brezynskie, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, GeoSmart Energy.  “We’re responding by introducing PCO technology so powerful it has proven effective in cleaning the air within the confined spaces of nuclear submarines.”

Dealers like the fact that the unit can be installed in any existing HVAC system, doesn’t require filters and comes with an extensive warranty, all features that appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers seeking cost-effective solutions for improving indoor air quality.

In introducing the cost-effective ECO line, GeoSmart Energy brings to market two forced air geothermal heat pump options for budget-conscious consumers seeking affordable, high quality alternatives to the company’s more expensive Premium product lines.

ENERGY STAR-rated, both the ECO-Y Series and ECO-Z Series are suitable for new construction or retrofit and will be particularly appealing options for homeowners seeking to replace existing heat pumps. They are ideal for both geothermal closed loop and well-water installations in single or multi-family housing.

The ECO-Y Series sets the industry standard in its class for performance, efficiency and quality  while the ECO Z is designed to adhere to the footprint of lower efficiency equipment while operating at the high efficiencies of today’s technology.

All ECO products feature variable speed ECM blower motors, robust microprocessor controls, environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant, and an optional hot water generator that delivers preheated water directly to the hot water heater to save money. The exterior galvanized steel cabinets feature gray powder-coated finishes for maximum corrosion resistance and high density foil-faced cabinet insulation for improved air quality and easy cleaning.

The ECO Series is performance-certified under ARI/ISO 13256-1.

“We have always prided ourselves on having one of the most complete geothermal product lines available on the market today,” says GeoSmart Energy’s Chad Brezynskie. “These latest editions to our indoor air quality and heat pump product lines mean dealers can offer their customers an even wider range of products from which to choose, and makes geothermal technology an affordable option for the more budget-conscious consumer.”

Spacious 40,000 square foot facility is the new home for the company’s national head office, distribution centre and state-of-the-art geothermal training and testing facility.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    April 24, 2009

Cambridge, ON – GeoSmart Energy has become a bright light in an otherwise dismal economy reinforcing to government and businesses alike that an investment in the renewable energy industry is a positive step forward in improving Canada’s ailing economy.

During a time when many businesses are struggling to make ends meet, GeoSmart Energy continues to experience rapid growth with record sales that have positioned the company as one of the largest non-manufacturing based distributors of geothermal only products in North America.

The official opening of its massive new multi-function complex in Cambridge, Ontario today is a vivid example of just how far the four-year old company has come. GeoSmart Energy’s spacious 40,000 square foot facility is the new home for the company’s national head office, distribution centre and state-of-the-art geothermal training and testing facility – and more than five times the size of its previous 6,800 square foot facility.

The move is indicative of the company’s unprecedented growth and a sign that Canadians are quickly embracing the economic and environmental benefits of using renewable energy to heat and cool their homes and businesses. Since 2005, GeoSmart Energy has more than quadrupled its staff complement and developed an impressive network of 300+ dealers across Canada and more than 600 contractors in the United States and Canada.

“Sustainable energy is a sound investment in the future of this country and it’s rewarding to see so many people electing to invest in a cleaner, more cost-effective and energy efficient way to heat and cool their homes and businesses,” says Chad Brezynskie, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, GeoSmart Energy.

“When it comes to developing green solutions for Ontario, GeoSmart Energy brings exceptional leadership, energy and skill to the table, and we hope other companies will take their lead and follow suit,” says Kevin Flynn, Parliamentary Assistant to the Ontario Minister of the Environment, who was on hand to help the Cambridge company mark its official opening. “Going green is good business and its opening up new opportunities for a prosperous future.”

Greg Durocher, President and CEO of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce couldn’t agree more. “GeoSmart Energy’s rapid growth sends a strong message to businesses and entrepreneurs here in Cambridge and across the country that going green is part of a smart business plan that contributes positively to the economy.”

GeoSmart Energy CEO Stan Marco’s receipt of the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition’s prestigious Prize for National Leadership last fall has further elevated the GeoSmart Energy brand, making it one of the most recognized geothermal brands in the marketplace today.

“Stan Marco was one of this country’s first CGC recognized trainers, and today, his company houses what is arguably one of the most impressive dedicated geothermal training centres in North America,” notes Denis Tanguay, President and CEO, Canadian GeoExchange Coalition. “Thanks to industry leaders like GeoSmart Energy, Canada has successfully built a geoexchange infrastructure that is unique in the world and capable of sustaining the ongoing development of our industry.”
Further reinforcing GeoSmart Energy’s presence in the marketplace are the strategic partnerships the company has secured with organizations like F.W. Webb, the largest heating and cooling contractor in the Northeastern United States; ClimateCare, Canada’s leading HVAC co-operative, representing a network of more than 30 independent residential HVAC professional contracting companies across Ontario; and Alliance Homes, resulting in the installation of geothermal technology in the construction of an adult lifestyle community in southern Ontario.

The company’s solid reputation for product innovation is reflected in the attractive stainless steel and blue cabinets that house its geothermal units and in the PE100 green geothermal pipe it uses in installations. “We’re constantly exploring opportunities to further improve existing geothermal technology,” says Stan Marco. “We want our products to be the best they can be for the dealers who sell them, the contractors who install them, and ultimately, for the customers who buy them.”

The official opening of GeoSmart Energy’s new facility marked a week of activity that saw the company welcome more than 95 dealers from across Canada and the United States to its annual Dealer Meeting and Awards Banquet where it acknowledged the significant role that dealers have had in the company’s success.

“What makes us gel as a company and as a network of dealers is that we all share one very important thing in common – we’re all passionate about delivering exceptional customer service,” says Stan Marco.
