  • GeoSmart Energy Receives Cambridge Business Excellence Award

Business of the Year Under 50 Employees

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    March 31, 2010

Cambridge, ON – GeoSmart Energy is the proud recipient of a Business of the Year Under 50 Award presented at the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce’s 9th Annual Business Excellence Awards. Held on March 25th before a sold-out audience at the Armenian Centre, the awards recognize Cambridge area businesses or individuals that have demonstrated a significant and sustained commitment to positive business development, economic growth and diversity.

In announcing the award, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Greg Durocher noted that “in spite of the economy, this year’s winner was in a growth mode of unprecedented measure. From its humble beginnings less than five years ago, GeoSmart Energy has grown into a remarkable leader in geothermal technology leading to its expansion into a 40,000 square foot facility here in Cambridge.”

Mr. Durocher pointed out that energy savings today are no longer merely environmental practice but rather a part of every business plan for sustainability, and an area where GeoSmart Energy is leading the way in providing state-of-the-art solutions.

“We are delighted that GeoSmart Energy has been acknowledged in this way by our business peers here in Cambridge,” says Cheryl Marco, President, GeoSmart Energy, who was on hand to receive the company’s latest award. “This award is a direct reflection of the efforts of a small but energetic and visionary GeoSmart team that is ably supported by a vast network of equally passionate dealers and contractors across Canada and the United States.”

GeoSmart Energy is one of the largest non-manufacturing-based distributors of geothermal-only products in North America and a premium brand name within the geothermal marketplace. Today the thriving business boasts a growing network of 300+ dealers across Canada and more than 600 contractors in the United States and Canada. To keep up with growing demand for its products and services and a team of staff that has more than quadrupled since 2005, the company moved into new premises in Cambridge in the Spring of 2009.

“Our formula for success is deeply rooted in our belief that we’re not just selling a geothermal product, but rather a ‘system’ that is supported by a ‘customer-first’ mentality, a comprehensive education and training program, a savvy and knowledgeable network of dealers and a highly trained team of installers,” notes Cheryl.

While a relatively young company, GeoSmart Energy has already earned a reputation for combining innovative and people-friendly practices with premium, cost-effective, energy efficient and renewable heating and cooling solutions for both home and business. Committed to accelerating the geothermal industry in Canada, GeoSmart Energy is home to what is considered one of the most impressive dedicated geothermal training centres in North America.

  • GeoSmart crosses Canada to meet with Dealers

    March 8, 2010

Product launches for GeoSmart Energy’s new hydronic series, air purifier and economical line of heat pumps were among the topics covered at a series of regional GeoSmart dealer meetings held across Canada in February.

    National Dealer Meetings
The day-long sessions in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Kelowna featured presentations by GeoSmart Energy CEO Stan Marco, Chad Brezynskie, Vice President, Sales & Marketing and Robert Longphee, Director, Communications & Public Relations.

Stan kicked the sessions off with an industry overview. Touching on what’s ahead for GeoSmart in 2010, he welcomed GeoSmart’s newest Territory Manager, June Thomson, who is providing coverage for Southwestern Ontario. He noted increasing dealer interest in the United States for GeoSmart products for commercial and residential applications, opening the doors for some new and exciting growth opportunities. Stan also touched on the new Customer Relationship Management software being used by GeoSmart’s customer service reps to further streamline the ordering process for dealers.

    New Geothermal Customized Drilling Rig
Among the exciting announcements made throughout the day-long sessions was GeoSmart’s acquisition of a customized geothermal drilling rig. The compact drill, designed in collaboration with Boart Longyear, features high efficiency hydraulics and dual rotary capability.

“Demand for residential and commercial drilling services has increased dramatically for GeoSmart Energy and our geothermal dealers,” notes Stan. “Boart Longyear took the time to work with us and tailor a geothermal drill rig to meet our needs by bringing together their worldwide resources, tools and experiences.”

GeoSmart drill rig services are available to dealers working in the Southern Ontario corridor for both residential and commercial applications.

GeoSmart and the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition
With the continuing expansion of geothermal associations at regional and provincial levels, Stan reiterated GeoSmart Energy’s commitment to remaining aligned with the CGC at the national level. “We believe the CGC is doing a great job representing our industry, and look forward to continuing to support their efforts to raise the profile of geothermal locally, provincially and nationally.”

CGC President and CEO Denis Tanguay provided dealers in Ottawa with an overview of the Canadian geoexchange industry, offering compelling statistical data showcasing how the geothermal industry has grown at both the national and provincial level over the past few years. His presentation included data on units installed, types of installations, installations by loop type and system cost by loop type.

Other guest presenters included representatives from Polytubes who presented in both Winnipeg and Kelowna talking about GeoSmart’s PE100 geothermal pipe and why it continues to be the leading geothermal pipe in the industry.

Throughout the day Chad Brezynskie showcased GeoSmart Energy’s newest products including the Premium H Series of hydronic units, the economically-priced ECO Y and ECO Z heat pump series and the industry-leading GeoAir PCO air purifier.

“These latest editions to our indoor air quality and heat pump product lines mean dealers can offer their customers an even wider range of products from which to choose, and we take pride in offering this level of diversification to help dealers grow their businesses.”

  • GeoSmart Energy Remains Ahead of the Curve with New Product Lines

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    February 24, 2010

Ottawa, ON – When it comes to innovative consumer-oriented product development, GeoSmart Energy is continuing to pull out all the stops with the release today of its new ECO and GeoAir product lines.

Unveiled at the first of four regional GeoSmart Energy dealer meetings being held across the country, the geothermal company’s competitively-priced ECO-Y Series and ECO-Z Series heat pumps and leading edge GeoAir PCO air purifier are already generating ‘buzz’ among dealers eager to move the new products into their showrooms.

“GeoSmart Energy is proving once again why they are at the forefront in geothermal product design,” says Mike Barry of ComfortZone, Cobourg, Ontario in attendance at the product unveiling. “It’s thanks to consumer-friendly product diversification like this that we’re able to remain highly competitive within the HVAC industry.”

The company’s GeoAir PCO, one of four indoor air quality products in this line, introduces the Canadian HVAC market to one of the most advanced air purifier technologies available today. Unlike existing air cleaning systems that rely solely on ultraviolet light, the PCO integrates a titanium dioxide semiconductor to leverage photocatalytic oxidation allowing it to vaporize indoor air pollutants, including those that cause odors, and break them down into non-toxic products like C02 and H20. Bacteria, viruses, mold spores and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) are destroyed when they come into contact with the system’s 187 square-inch Ti02 grid. The system is cost-effective, maintenance-free and provides maximum energy efficiency with negligible resistance to airflow.

“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) consistently ranks indoor air pollution as among the top five environmental risks to public health,” notes Chad Brezynskie, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, GeoSmart Energy.  “We’re responding by introducing PCO technology so powerful it has proven effective in cleaning the air within the confined spaces of nuclear submarines.”

Dealers like the fact that the unit can be installed in any existing HVAC system, doesn’t require filters and comes with an extensive warranty, all features that appeal to environmentally-conscious consumers seeking cost-effective solutions for improving indoor air quality.

In introducing the cost-effective ECO line, GeoSmart Energy brings to market two forced air geothermal heat pump options for budget-conscious consumers seeking affordable, high quality alternatives to the company’s more expensive Premium product lines.

ENERGY STAR-rated, both the ECO-Y Series and ECO-Z Series are suitable for new construction or retrofit and will be particularly appealing options for homeowners seeking to replace existing heat pumps. They are ideal for both geothermal closed loop and well-water installations in single or multi-family housing.

The ECO-Y Series sets the industry standard in its class for performance, efficiency and quality  while the ECO Z is designed to adhere to the footprint of lower efficiency equipment while operating at the high efficiencies of today’s technology.

All ECO products feature variable speed ECM blower motors, robust microprocessor controls, environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant, and an optional hot water generator that delivers preheated water directly to the hot water heater to save money. The exterior galvanized steel cabinets feature gray powder-coated finishes for maximum corrosion resistance and high density foil-faced cabinet insulation for improved air quality and easy cleaning.

The ECO Series is performance-certified under ARI/ISO 13256-1.

“We have always prided ourselves on having one of the most complete geothermal product lines available on the market today,” says GeoSmart Energy’s Chad Brezynskie. “These latest editions to our indoor air quality and heat pump product lines mean dealers can offer their customers an even wider range of products from which to choose, and makes geothermal technology an affordable option for the more budget-conscious consumer.”

  • GeoSmart Energy Makes an Impact at Canada’s Outdoor Farm & Energy Expo

    September 18, 2009
For the first time this year, the Canadian Energy Expo combined with Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show to showcase the latest developments in green technologies, particularly those that address the specific needs of farm and municipal operations. The farming community continues to take a leadership role in Canada as an early adopter of alternative energy sources and is a growing supporter of geothermal technology.
GeoSmart Energy’s presence at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show and Energy Expo in Woodstock, Ontario on September 15, 16 and 17 was a showstopper drawing massive crowds and generating great interest in geothermal technology.
Among independent companies, GeoSmart Energy occupied the largest tent (50’ x 40’) in the outdoor courtyard of the Energy Expo, drawing immediate attention with our 11’ x 20’ banners, double-sided flag poles and pull-ups. The generous outdoor setting also allowed us to leverage the GeoSmart Energy branded van and fire truck which became popular backdrops for numerous photo opportunities as well as points of conversation.
While these visual cues drew the crowds into our tent, it was our innovative product line and the opportunity to speak with GeoSmart Energy staff and dealers that captured attendees’ imagination.
“The farm show was as good as it gets in terms of dealer exposure,” says Jason Grieb, President, Advanced Geo-Thermal Systems Inc. in West Montrose, Ontario, one of seven local dealers on hand during the course of the show. “We had the strongest presence in the energy section at the show with the GeoSmart Energy fire truck, banners, operational Premium G, mini heat pump and marketing materials attracting lots of attendees and generating multiple lead opportunities. Excellent effort from everyone involved!”
Other local dealers on hand in the GeoSmart Energy tent included Brant Oxford, Oxford Plumbing, Father and Son Geothermal Systems, J.D. Holding, Geo Niagara and Norfolk Energy.
A particularly compelling feature in the tent was a fully functional three-tonne Premium G, leveraging a pond loop in the Ducks Unlimited Wetland Farm Pond behind the tent. “On crisp mornings, attendees marveled at the heat being generated in our tent while in the afternoons, they were able to experience the air conditioning features of the unit,” says Robert Longphee, Director, Communications, GeoSmart Energy. “What better way to showcase geothermal technology than offering a firsthand opportunity to feel the heating and cooling properties of our units.”
Other products and resources available at the four 10-foot booths inside the GeoSmart Energy tent included our new large scale Premium hydronic system, Premium Q, hot water tankwater purifiers, case studies, brochures and customer testimonials.
“This was an excellent opportunity for dealers like myself to further educate homeowners about geothermal technology and to not only tell them what sets us apart from others in the same industry,” says Jeff Kubisch, President, Geo Niagara, “but to show them as well.” Jeff acknowledged that it was also a great opportunity for dealers to share and exchange leads.
More than 17,000 people attended the show each day with many traveling from at least 150 kilometres away. While the majority of attendees were from Ontario and the local farming community, GeoSmart Energy staff and dealers struck up conversations with people from as far away as Nova Scotia, Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Florida and Wyoming.
Over the course of the three-day show, more than 110 homeowners signed up for GeoSmart Energy’s manufacturer’s rebate, solidifying their interest in receiving a geothermal estimate from a local dealer within the next 30 days.
So what does next year’s event hold in store? Given GeoSmart Energy’s new 3-year sponsorship arrangement with Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show and Energy Expo, expect our presence to be even stronger.

  • CGC Hosts National Consultation on Geoexchange Codes, Standards and Regulations

    July 31, 2009

As part of its market transformation initiative and in its ongoing efforts to raise the profile of geothermal, the CGC embarked on a national consultation this summer to discuss how the industry is regulated. Throughout the months of June and July, the CGC hosted several discussion forums across the country, meeting with CGC accredited professionals and other industry stakeholders to identify issues with existing codes, standards and regulations.

GeoSmart CEO Stan Marco was among 75 people who attended one of the day-long Toronto sessions where he found himself immersed in a passionate and lively discussion with industry peers.

Among the hot topics discussed in Toronto was the issue of some sub-contractors electing to install geothermal systems that don’t heat the entire house. The issue of undersizing equipment in an effort to increase sales volume generated intense discussion.

“At GeoSmart Energy, we have always stressed the importance of selling a homeowner a geothermal system that heats the entire home, not just part of it,” says Stan. “It only stands to reason that this is what the homeowner expects when he invests in a geothermal system.”

The geothermal industry markets itself as an efficient and effective alternative to traditional fossil fuels – an ideal way to consistently heat and cool an entire home throughout every season. The practice of undersizing to build a competitive edge in the marketplace ultimately leads to dissatisfied consumers and impacts the integrity of the entire geothermal industry.

“The general feeling at the session I attended was that the industry as a whole is very concerned about this trend,” says Stan. The current Canadian standard in the gas industry is that systems must be sized 100-140% of what the house requires, whereas in geothermal, the existing standard is that equipment must be sized 70-105%. “The geothermal standard is antiquated and needs to change.”

Another topic that generated debate focused on heat/loss calculations. In an industry where the major selling point is ‘efficiency’, the current accepted practice for calculating heat/loss worldwide is cause for concern. Heat/loss calculations play a pivotal role in determining the size of the equipment that should be installed in a home whether it’s gas or geothermal.

Current practice allows for oversizing the heat/loss calculation by as much as 40%. “In geothermal, we’re not just heating and cooling houses, we’re trying to do it efficiently and there’s nothing efficient about installing a furnace that is 40% oversized,” notes Stan.

What Stan and many others would like to see is what he refers to as an ‘energy efficient heat/loss calculation” that would prevent someone from arbitrarily building in extra capacity to the calculation. “We’re moving into a new era where it’s all about energy efficiency. We need to come up with a program that indicates what the real heat loss of a home is and then let the customer and the contractor decide between them how big a unit the homeowner needs to heat and cool the entire home.”

Other topics that spawned discussion included the training and handling required for methanol and ethanol heat transfer fluids, and the need for the industry to have a recognizable pipe synonymous with geothermal installations.

“The one thing that everybody agreed on at the meeting was what a tremendous job the CGC is doing in setting the tone for training across the country. Because of the CGC, our industry is now meeting a minimum standard in this regard.”

The information gathered through these national consultations will be used by the CGC to formulate recommendations for standards development and regulators, among others.

  • GeoSmart Energy a bright light in struggling economy

GeoSmart Energy a bright light in struggling economy

Spacious 40,000 square foot facility is the new home for the company’s national head office, distribution centre and state-of-the-art geothermal training and testing facility.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    April 24, 2009

Cambridge, ON – GeoSmart Energy has become a bright light in an otherwise dismal economy reinforcing to government and businesses alike that an investment in the renewable energy industry is a positive step forward in improving Canada’s ailing economy.

During a time when many businesses are struggling to make ends meet, GeoSmart Energy continues to experience rapid growth with record sales that have positioned the company as one of the largest non-manufacturing based distributors of geothermal only products in North America.

The official opening of its massive new multi-function complex in Cambridge, Ontario today is a vivid example of just how far the four-year old company has come. GeoSmart Energy’s spacious 40,000 square foot facility is the new home for the company’s national head office, distribution centre and state-of-the-art geothermal training and testing facility – and more than five times the size of its previous 6,800 square foot facility.

The move is indicative of the company’s unprecedented growth and a sign that Canadians are quickly embracing the economic and environmental benefits of using renewable energy to heat and cool their homes and businesses. Since 2005, GeoSmart Energy has more than quadrupled its staff complement and developed an impressive network of 300+ dealers across Canada and more than 600 contractors in the United States and Canada.

“Sustainable energy is a sound investment in the future of this country and it’s rewarding to see so many people electing to invest in a cleaner, more cost-effective and energy efficient way to heat and cool their homes and businesses,” says Chad Brezynskie, Vice President, Sales & Marketing, GeoSmart Energy.

“When it comes to developing green solutions for Ontario, GeoSmart Energy brings exceptional leadership, energy and skill to the table, and we hope other companies will take their lead and follow suit,” says Kevin Flynn, Parliamentary Assistant to the Ontario Minister of the Environment, who was on hand to help the Cambridge company mark its official opening. “Going green is good business and its opening up new opportunities for a prosperous future.”

Greg Durocher, President and CEO of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce couldn’t agree more. “GeoSmart Energy’s rapid growth sends a strong message to businesses and entrepreneurs here in Cambridge and across the country that going green is part of a smart business plan that contributes positively to the economy.”

GeoSmart Energy CEO Stan Marco’s receipt of the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition’s prestigious Prize for National Leadership last fall has further elevated the GeoSmart Energy brand, making it one of the most recognized geothermal brands in the marketplace today.

“Stan Marco was one of this country’s first CGC recognized trainers, and today, his company houses what is arguably one of the most impressive dedicated geothermal training centres in North America,” notes Denis Tanguay, President and CEO, Canadian GeoExchange Coalition. “Thanks to industry leaders like GeoSmart Energy, Canada has successfully built a geoexchange infrastructure that is unique in the world and capable of sustaining the ongoing development of our industry.”
Further reinforcing GeoSmart Energy’s presence in the marketplace are the strategic partnerships the company has secured with organizations like F.W. Webb, the largest heating and cooling contractor in the Northeastern United States; ClimateCare, Canada’s leading HVAC co-operative, representing a network of more than 30 independent residential HVAC professional contracting companies across Ontario; and Alliance Homes, resulting in the installation of geothermal technology in the construction of an adult lifestyle community in southern Ontario.

The company’s solid reputation for product innovation is reflected in the attractive stainless steel and blue cabinets that house its geothermal units and in the PE100 green geothermal pipe it uses in installations. “We’re constantly exploring opportunities to further improve existing geothermal technology,” says Stan Marco. “We want our products to be the best they can be for the dealers who sell them, the contractors who install them, and ultimately, for the customers who buy them.”

The official opening of GeoSmart Energy’s new facility marked a week of activity that saw the company welcome more than 95 dealers from across Canada and the United States to its annual Dealer Meeting and Awards Banquet where it acknowledged the significant role that dealers have had in the company’s success.

“What makes us gel as a company and as a network of dealers is that we all share one very important thing in common – we’re all passionate about delivering exceptional customer service,” says Stan Marco.

into the earth’s energy to provide homeowners with forced air heating and cooling, hydronic (radiant)
heat and domestic hot water production ‐ all in one convenient package. Hydronic heat is widely
considered to offer the greatest home comfort, while forced air is regarded to be the most cost effective
way to heat and cool a home. GeoSmart’s new system combines the best of both worlds.

“The Premium Q can potentially eliminate the need for homeowners to purchase a boiler unit for
radiant heat, a furnace for the rest of the house, and an air conditioner for cooling the home in the
summer,” notes Chad Brezynskie, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, GeoSmart Energy. “They’ll find
all three in this one, convenient unit ‐ the most cost‐effective, energy efficient all‐in‐one geothermal
system available on the market today.”

The Premium Q quad system combines environmentally friendly R410A refrigerant, a dual capacity scroll
compressor and the unmatched energy efficiency of geothermal technology. When coupled with the
company’s intelligent thermostats and an integrated monitoring system, it provides the finest in heating
    and cooling comfort and reliability.

John Kubilanski of Kub Mechanical & Geothermal Services, one of 50 GeoSmart dealers from across
North America to attend the product unveiling, is impressed with GeoSmart’s ability to consistently raise
the bar when it comes to product development. “The Premium Q is another fine example of why
GeoSmart is one of North America’s leading geothermal suppliers. Not only are they stellar when it
comes to dealer services and technical support but their attention to design, function and efficiency is
second to none, and I am truly looking forward to showcasing the Premium Q to my customers when I
return to West St Paul, Manitoba.”

GeoSmart’s geothermal heating and cooling systems tap into the free and renewable energy stored in
the earth. By simply moving heat energy to or from the home and earth through a ground loop system,
a geothermal unit achieves efficiency levels that ordinary gas furnaces or air conditioners are unable to
    reach.
